About Movement Automatic...
Long About… (TLDR down below)
Daniel Sebastian, known to his friends as Daniel or Sebastian, created Movement Automatic in 1999 originally as the title of a mixtape that he shared with others in the early years of his dj and writing works. Back in the day, all the mixtapes had titles. The titles were ways of expressing a collection of music written by other musicians, mixed together in time, but as an impression upon the person mixing them.
When he was first introduced to House music in the 90s underground North Florida scene, he was shy, like he often is now. The people who brought him to the music guided and cared for one another deeply. Before then, he didn’t dance much. Someone close to him changed everything when she said, “You don't have to try, just let the music move you.” When it did, it felt like the music MADE him dance. Like it couldn’t be stopped. Like the movement was automatic.
He began djing in St. Augustine, FL in 1998, travelling to many formative places in the years beyond; Hoboken, NJ where he worked overnights at Satellite Records, NYC and began to make connections, then later in the Chelsea club scene playing early parties at Home + Guesthouse. Time took him to Colorado then Indianapolis where, for many years, he didn’t play…but never left the music.
Soundcloud became a refuge for him when he didn’t play, listening to dj mixes, downloading them, and sharing them with friends. He credits, among many others, Dj Dan, Gavin Hardkiss, and Unders as three of the markedly influential musicians to him during that time. The desire to return to the decks came about after attending the Brainquility festival at Suwannee River Music Park…in February of 2020.
His friend and mentor, Mr. Collie, invited him to the online Mixlr.com radio music collective Asylum Digital Radio (ADR). He joined the many warm and talented djs of ADR in the unprecedented years that followed, playing for listeners and one another, keeping the vibe alive, and fostering the inception of Movement Automatic as an artist and the creation of the Color Room Series.
Movement Automatic presents as 7 different vibes of music, in 7 different colors, each with its own conceptual "room." He wanted to be able to play any music that moved him and organized that ideal in such a way to let fans know what they are getting into when they hit play. As such, the Color Room Series was born:
The Black Room Series – Hard Techno: Born after a trip to the Underground stage at Movement festival in 2023. Period.
The Red Room Series – Techno: Varieties of Raw, Warehouse light, Peak Time, and Hardgroove occupy this space.
The Yellow Room Series – House + Tech + Bass + Funk: This is where the heart of his love for house music is expressed.
The Orange Room Series – House + Deep + Jazz: Born in late 2023 as a result of zoning out on the work of some incredible Deep House artists with strong Jazz influences.
The Blue Room Series – Indie + Prog + House: The first of the Color Room Series mixes occurred in the Blue Room with Indie Dance and Melodic House themes.
The Green Room Series – Breaks + Electro: Florida Breaks were an important part of his upbringing. Broken beats make up the Green Room, ranging from vibrant atmospheric Breaks to deep Electro Bass.
The Purple Room Series – Drum + Bass: DNB. Liquid, Tech Step, Jungle, and anything in between.
Motivated by the gift electronic artists provided for him for many years prior to his return, Movement Automatic records, titles, and releases mixes on Soundcloud to share with others. At the launch of this website in 2024, his discography numbered 99 recordings having mixed over 1600 tracks. To celebrate the 100th mix he released 7 of them…one for each Color Room. Links to all mixes can be found on their respective Color Room pages as well as track lists of each mix and more.
Daniel is also a writer. He recounts that one of the most memorable experiences in his early years was in noticing that the lyrics in electronic music were often obscured to the ear, leading dancers to hear other things…whatever they needed the music to say for their dance. This principle is a central theme to a feature of the Color Room “Story” which is being written as time passes. It manifests as original writings that include the mix titles and track titles. The first entry can be found in the Red Room Vol. 1 mix titled “Gravity Well.” Confused? It’s understandable. Go check out Gravity Well’s album art tiles. It’ll become clear.
